Inventor award 2014

October 24th, 2014

As part of the collaboration between the company Sisvel and Rai, the day October 24th, 2014, at the CRIT, it was held the first edition of the inventor award. It is an event, planned annually, during which they presented to the public the results obtained as part of this collaboration and is rewarded the most important invention developed during the past year.

This year, the inventor award went to Dr. Sabino Metta, a researcher at the CRIT, the importance of his invention “Method and system for recommending media content on a multimedia platform”, developed within the standard MPEG-UD and merged with an international patent issued in April 2014. in a world dominated by the Internet and where the amount of data, content and services is really awesome, the experience of the individual user has definitely enriched, but simultaneously made increasingly difficult to draw the figure right. To overcome this difficulty, in recent times, in addition to traditional search engines, they have increased the so-called recommendation systems tools that direct the user to tailor content and services. User Description The MPEG standard (MPEG-UD) aims to improve the experience of a specific user or user, engaged in the use of any content or service. A generic application can take advantage of the availability of standard descriptions to integrate horizontally recommendations from different sources. The result is a more natural and in an increased satisfaction by the user. Just to describe appropriately a generic multimedia experience, the idea came to the award-winning invention. The patented invention consists of a description that takes into account the semantic relationships that can exist between two or more multimedia content, and artifacts (comments, videos, etc) that may be added by the user. In this way, the explicit description, which is interpreted by machines, can be exploited by automatic algorithms (or semiautomatic) to recommend to the user ad-hoc content going better meet his needs. Currently the subject of patent award represents a precise technological solution within the MPEG-UD standard, which is now in the status of Committee Draft and is in the perspective of other food research and innovation and promoting a cultural education within the new technologies.
