RAI recognized as ‘Key Innovator’ by the European Commission for the NewsTagger innovation
The European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme has selected one of the innovations developed within the XReco project for the Innovation Radar platform. This initiative highlights the most promising outcomes of EU-funded research and innovation.
The XReco project (XR mEdia eCOsystem) is an international initiative funded by the European Horizon Europe programme. It brings together a consortium of 20 partners with the objective of integrating extended reality (XR) technologies—such as augmented and virtual reality—into media and broadcast production workflows.
Within the scope of the XReco project, “NewsTagger” was developed—an AI-based service for the automatic annotation of journalistic content. It is an optimized variant of the Llama 3.1 language model, specifically adapted for assigning a set of semantically meaningful tags to news articles. This tool supports activities such as categorization, indexing, and retrieval of journalistic content in a scalable manner, adaptable to heterogeneous application contexts.
The system has been designed for multilingual text processing, including, for example, Italian, English, Slovenian, and German, making it suitable for diverse and multicultural environments.
During this evaluation, RAI was identified by the European Commission as a Key Innovator, recognizing its central role in the development of the solution.
This result is attributed to the CRITS, which participated as a partner in the XReco project, contributing to the development of advanced AI-based technologies for the semantic classification of editorial content.
The Innovation Radar platform collects over 13,000 EU-funded innovations and represents a strategic tool for showcasing excellence, fostering technology transfer opportunities and industrial development.
The official publication of the innovation on the platform is expected in the coming weeks and will make key information about the project and RAI’s contribution publicly available, further strengthening the Company’s positioning within the European innovation landscape.
This recognition confirms the role of the CRITS as a driver of technological innovation supporting the evolution of public service content and services.
