Microphone Spherical Probe for Surround Sound
by
L. Scopece
The aim is to give the viewer, in his living room transformed in home theater, the surround sound: to offer an immersive experience from the view point of hearing. To achieve this we must act in the process of program production: shooting and postproduction audio must be multi-channel, high quality, while costs and ioperational impact on shooting must be limited.
The project promoted by the Rai Research Centre, in collaboration with AIDA, has allowed the development of a system, recently patented, which permits recording using a single multi-microphone probe with 32 capsules and the synthesis, based on Ambisonic theory, of a set of virtual microphones. Through the use of a joystick, we can easily define both the polar pattern and the pointing for each one among the set of seven virtual syntetized microphones.
We have launched a series of experiments to identify and define the scopes of the system.

Multimedia Services for Digital Radio
by
G. Alberico, P. Casagranda, F. Russo
This article describes prototype services built up to demonstrate how multimedia contents could enrich audio services. Synchro Slideshow is a slideshow service with images synchronized with the radio station program list. Photoblog gives users a powerful yet simple way to interact with the radio station, sending a photo shot of an interesting event, with a comment. Traffic Information allows users to be constantly informed about significant traffic events. The main application scenario refers to DAB family technologies, however the services were thought to also be used with Internet Radios, in a web environment. |
