ATLAS: Automatic Translation into Sign Languages
by Alberto Morello and Paolo Prinetto
The ATLAS project aims at translating written Italian language to Italian Sign Language and at visualizing it on different media via virtual characters. Resorting to statistical and rule-based approaches, the system first translates an Italian text into an intermediate language, which conveys both linguistic and visualization information items. Intermediate representations are then used by a planner to generate both the scene in which the signs will be performed and the related graphic engine commands. The service is intended to be delivered to several platforms, including DTT, Mobile, DVD, and Web. The paper presents the overall ATLAS system organization, architecture, and knowledge-bases.

Architectural acoustics - Design parameters and choice of materials - Part 2
by Leonardo and Alberto Ciprian
The field of architectural acoustics is very broad and the knowledge of the physical aspects is not sufficien to implement a project of acoustic treatment, but you should consider both the general design parameters, derived from various studies developed over the years, and the choice of materials to be used to achieve a particular effect. T his is the second of three articles on the architectural acoustics and provides an overview of the issues mentioned above. The physics of waves is the starting point to understand what kind of acoustic design applied to suit your needs. Here we intend to develop the discussion on the parameters of the environment, design and structure of the various architectural components, and then the choice of materials to be used according to the frequency and type of reverb you would expect and in view of the objective to be achieved
