New paradigms for human-media" augmented TV" and "Beyond the remote control"
by Roberto Iacoviello e Paola Sunna
This paper describes some prototypes developed
at Rai-Research Centre to offer a multiscreen interactive
experience and to explore opportunities and challenges underlying new modes of human and media interaction.
Concepts and related issues have been tackled from a broadcaster perspective. |

MPEG-7 Features in Hilbert Spaces: Linear Superpositions and Image Querying
by Elisa Maria Todarello, Walter Allasia e
Mario Stroppiana
Analogies exist between an Information Retrieval (IR) task and the process of measuring an observable quantity in Quantum Mechanics (QM). On the basis of these analogies, a method for the representation digital images is proposed. Images are characterised by MPEG-7 Visual Descriptors. Clusters of images are described as superpositions of vectors. The Geometric structure of Hilbert spaces and the rules of QM are adopted to compute similarity scores and cluster assignments. Current Content-Based IR (CBIR)techniques can take advantage from the use of this approach. A software prototype has been developed to test the method. |

3D-VMS (Virtual Microphone System) and the Opera (at work)
by Leonardo Scopece
3D-VMS system, introduced in previous articles, has recently taken advantage from improvements both technological and operational. The system is stable with respect to the theoretical development, but is still evolving, thanks to the improvements offered by the platform. The characteristics of reliability and qualityr, tested thorugh a wide set of tests in
production enviroments, were found to be very interesting and Rai for the first time has used the system to capture and live broadcast the "Lucia di Lammermoor" Opera, on Rai Radio 3 and on the Euroradio network. |

TAV: High Speed TV
Implementation aspects on the distribution of digital TV on high speed trains
by Andrea Bertella,Giuseppe Braccini, Vittoria Mignone, Silvio Ripamonti,
Bruno Sacco, Mirto Tabone and Giovanni Vitale
High-speed trains are often used as a traveling office, in many cases the train journey is experienced as a moment of relaxation. Whatever the style of our journey, having access to live TV content information or entertainment is no doubt a significant enrichment of the facilities on board. The Rai Research Centre has created, at the request of RaiWay, a feasibility study for a system that provides a service of receiving digital TV and radio programs by Rai on board of high speed trains.
