Version 6.04 (002)

Second Edition of MPEG-21 Media Contract Ontology has been released

After some months of delay, with respect to the approval, ISO/ IEC finally published the second edition of MPEG-21 Media Contract Ontology.

The couple of MPEG-21 standards on audiovisual rights, whose development the RAI’s Centre for Research and Technological Innovation has contributed to , has thus completed the publication phase for the second edition, the most complete version that can represent most of the actual cases for exploitation rights definition, as it is now required in media contracts.

There are two standards in question: the Contract Expression Language (CEL), which forms part 20 of MPEG-21 and provides an XML format, and Media Contract Ontology (MCO), part 21 of MPEG-21, which uses the Web Ontology Language (OWL).

For both machine readable media contract formats, the first edition was released in 2013, followed, for MCO only, by a Corrigendum in 2015.

The two second editions had been approved together, but the whims of the publication process made CEL preceded MCO by some months.

The MCO is used within the new RAI management system.
