5G Broadcast from Paris 2024 to Milano Cortina 2026

Ing. Vittoria Mignone

The 5G Broadcast technology, whose standardization was completed in December 2025 (news “5G Broadcast: Rai Research Centre drives the standard development in 3GPP Release 19“),  will enable the delivery of live TV programmes to next-generation mobile phones without consuming mobile data nor overloading 5G mobile networks.

The system is based on the broadcast transmission in the UHF band (470–694 MHz), adopting principles similar to those of digital terrestrial television and leveraging the resilient infrastructure of TV distribution network towers.

This approach ensures high-quality reception even in particularly challenging scenarios, such as live coverage of of major sporting events.

5G Broadcast: CRITS leads the definition of the 3GPP Release 19 standard

Ing. Assunta De Vita

The Rai Research Center, in collaboration with the EBU, played a key role in integrating 5G Broadcast into 3GPP standards, actively participating in the working groups. Key features of Release 19, approved between 2024 and 2025, include Time-Frequency Interleaving, which improves receiver performance, and the definition of subbands in the UHF band (470-698 MHz), which accelerates the global industrial adoption of the technology. The completion of the Work Items in December 2025 confirms the Rai Research Center’s role as a leading player in the innovation of future broadcasting systems.

CPTO, 9-11 dicembre 2025

RAI CRITS organised a workshop dedicated to virtual production with volumetric LED wall technology, offering participants a high-level training experience.

These LED walls are defined as ‘volumetric’ because they are often configured with a floor and ceiling, creating an immersive environment that wraps actors or presenters in a virtual space in real time. This approach overcomes the limitations of previous technology, the green screen, which forces performers to work in a completely green environment, devoid of visual references, often generating a sense of alienation.

The practical initiative was carried out in collaboration with the EBU’s LED Virtual Production group and with the support of Sony, involving key figures from the RAI company’s management, including TV Production and Technologies.
