Open Doors to Innovation – Media industry and innovative startup meet
A workshop about innovation in media
The Centre for Research, Technology Innovation and Experimentation of Rai organized on 4 December 2018 “Open Doors to Innovation”, a workshop with startups and innovative companies with the aim of increasing the knowledge of areas of corporate interest and creating a network to contribute to innovation in the media sector. The initiative is part of the European MediaRoad project, which includes Rai and other European partners such as EBU, VRT and the BBC (more information on www.mediaroad.eu). The startups have been involved thanks to the Italian Startup Association and the incubator of the Polytechnic University of Turin I3P.
During the first part of the workshop, the Research Centre presented some current research topics, ranging from applied artificial intelligence to media, radio personalization, smart speakers, inclusion services and deep learning applied to video encoding. Then Rai Digital, ICT, Teche, Radio Rai and Rai Pubblicità presented the areas where innovation is of key importance in the company.
In the second part of the workshop, startups and companies involved by Rai presented projects and development themes, solutions and prototypes related to the interests of Rai and the media industry in general.
AgileLab presented its technologies based on machine learning and artificial intelligence for data analysis.
CELI, a company specialized in language analysis and acquired by H-FARM in 2017, introduced the theme of Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Analysis.
Mathesia presented its crowdsourcing platform, a network of more than 2500 researchers, professors and consultants offering solutions based on applied mathematics and data science.
Radiosa is a company of media experts offering an innovative solution for aggregation and personalization of radio on web and apps.
DeadPixels follows the development of solutions with the aim of combining Art and Creativity on one side and advanced technologies such as Computer Graphics and Virtual and Augmented Reality on the other.
iPress presented a platform that, thanks to the research and aggregation of online news, helps journalists, bloggers and communication operators in their work.
Dreamset, an agency that uses storytelling with emotional impact and technology to create viral videos, presented some some examples of its production.
Pikkart presented its Computer Vision and Augmented Reality service, based on AI algorithms.
Kineton, a startup founded in 2017, presented its solutions for the Media sector (applications for SmartTV, HbbTV, Mobile), for ICT and the Automotive sector.
Littlesea Video focuses on the video automation industry, offering automatic synthesis of videos from data sources, and in 2016 won a loan from Google’s Digital News Initiative.
Immodrone, a company specializing in the use of drones for detections in otherwise inaccessible areas and seeking the enhancement of the real estate sector, presented some examples created by its network of over 1500 drone drivers.
Finally, Animoka, an innovative and well-established digital animation studio, presented an example of its production of high-quality digital content.
At the end of the works, the participants were able to discuss possible future collaborations, while technological demonstrations were made available by the Research Centre and ICT.
The discussions and the collected feedback by the participants will be used to propose another edition of the initiative.
